I have never seen such a deflated team as England were tonight. They were personified by the drooping shoulders of Wayne Rooney as he looked lost for the entire match, a look that I have never witnessed before, especially by him. Two matches and two draws; not a good start to the England campaign.
Fabio Capello is one of the great old fashioned managers, he has stayed with the 4-4-2 formation through thick and thin. During these two matches I can’t help but be reminded of Mike Bassett’s performance, as he stubbornly sticks to this formation saying it is the key to England’s success, although his story was a work of comic fiction. I have always laid my trust with Capello, as he lead England to an almost flawless qualifying campaign. But England obviously have a lot more to show and it is their confidence that is keeping them behind, and for the first time i find myself doubting him.
I hope, for England’s sake, that just like in Mike Bassett we make it through our group stages and go on to prove ourselves to defy all our critics, but the more i think about the bigger teams, less evidence for success becomes exceedingly apparent.

Teams and managers need to throw more caution to the wind and attack more. They may lose the ball a bit more, but they will be rewarded for it with goals.
Rooney is pulling a disappearing act out there, and capello needs to put on some players that are hungry and not (apparently) so bleeding tired from their league campaign.
